ELM327 OBD2 with FTDI & 25K80

Hi!

I speak a little Finnish, so I will try to explain in English and I hope it is not a problem.

I need an ELM327 OBD2 adapter to be able to work with DDT4ALL and change some settings (disable auto-fold side mirrors) on my Renault Kadjar 1.2 TCe 2018 year, but I can't find the right one. I already bought one and it doesn't work with my car. Googling I found that I need the original ELM327 that has a 25K80 and FTDI chip, but whenever I google this model I get that this version is specially designed for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. That is mostly on AliExpress and I can't find it on some Finnish webstore.
Does anyone on this forum have one for sale or maybe give me a link where I can buy it?

What was the problem with the one you bought? You couldn't connect at all, or were you able to connect but only with limited functionality? Is it Bluetooth, WiFi, USB? Have you tried it with any other software than just DDT4ALL?

With some older renault models I've used DDT4ALL with no major problems just by using my cheap China ELM clone. It does not have to be genuine ELM as long as it is compatible with the ELM327 command set. You won't even find any genuine ELM chip adapter very easily. But for sure there are lots of cheap copies on the market that do not work properly, with any software.

Model year 2018... quite a new model. Probably not and hope not, but there may already be a Renault gateway installed which limits programming functions via the OBD2 port.

It is a standard USB v1.5 ELM interface and as I can see it's not connected at all. Only the first red light is on, which should be a power indicator as I read from the manual. It is also Chinese clone which I bought from estore.nu. It's just that I've seen a lot of posts on different forums that people complain about this cheap Chinese adapter and that it is important that these two chips (FTDI & 25K80) are inside. But whenever I google ELM327 obd2 adapter with those two chips it says it's for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.


I didn't try it with some other software, but I got some error code reader software on CD that came with this adapter which I will try. Just to mention that I have installed the latest driver that came on CD.
I also hope that there is no Renault gateway installed and they should make auto-fold mirrors on/off option available, especially for cars sold in places with strong winter.
Also searching on different forums I found that people are saying that "Vgate iCar 2 Mini ELM327 OBD II WiFi" works OK, so I will try to find that one and order it.

I have one that looks exactly the same than the one in your attached picture. And as I wrote it works fairly well with DDT4ALL (and PyRen). But yeah, does not really prove anything as can be different components inside, even if they look the same. Of course yours can be broken as well, who can tell.

Have you checked in the device manager that Windows really recognizes it correctly when you plug it into a USB-port? Mine recognizes it as "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port". These can sometimes be quite tricky and annoying when it comes to drivers. You may just have an issue with the device drivers if only red LED is on.

Probably that statement about Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles just refers to some U.S. model compatibility. I'm not familiar with them, but at least on European models if something claims to be Ford compatible it just means that there is a manual or automatic switch for Ford's MS-CAN and HS-CAN networks and therefore is able to scan beyond the standard OBD2 command set, but even so those adapters should still work with any other passenger car too.

I have checked device manager and everything seems to be OK, but as you said it maybe be broken or not having corresponding chips for Renault. I agree with you about that statement about US cars and I think too that it should work with other brand as well. I saw that they look the same like this one, but they do have that switch between MS-CAN and HS-CAN networks. I will try several things and let you know the results. I hope this thread will help other people that have similar issue or want to play with their Renaults.
