Airbag principle on Espace 3:
- 1 airbag ("airbag ECU") placed in the center of the car protected from direct shocks. It is fixed to the floor in the passenger compartment by 3 screws in front of the shift lever approximately under the drinking can rest. It contains a shock sensor (an accelerometer X and Y) and the electronic board to analyze the signal and to send the order or not to trigger the belts and airbags. It is connected by one or two connectors I do not know anymore with a multitude of wires.
- 2 lateral sensors (Y acceleration), called satellite sensors for lateral crashes (1 sensor at the bottom of each side pillar, next to where the front seat belt retractor is attached). Each satellite is this time well waterproof (small case of about 2cm3 with a sensor inside and an electronic card immersed in a resin). This satellite is fixed by a single screw and has a single connector (with 2 wires of memory).
These 2 lateral sensors are connected by a beam to the airbag box (the computer)

Finally, there are all the active safety devices connected (by wires or harnesses to use the right term) and controlled by this airbag box, namely:
- the two belt buckle pretensioners (one for each belt on the front of the vehicle). When this triggers, the belt buckle is stretched about 10cm to tighten the full belt.
- the 2 front airbags (one in the steering wheel for the driver and one under the dashboard for the front passenger)
- the 2 side airbags (hidden in the front seatback trim, on the side of the seat near the door => serves to protect the ribs (the bones) and of course the head in case of lateral crash)

To answer various remarks I read here:
- beyond 10 years, guarantee period in quotation marks, everyone does not care, unless a fatal accident, because there there is always trial and victory assured.
- NOT the case airbag is not yet waterproof in France, unlike the USA or just a guy who was doing 4x4 in the rivers made a lawsuit after an accident or the airbag had become hs. Mistrust of those who overflow coca or coffee and which flows everywhere. It is very rare but the risk exists.
- it is normal that the engine does not restart anymore because the airbag box after a crash cuts off the power supply of the petrol pump, to avoid the fire after a crash. You even have on some models the warnings that go on by themselves and the unlocking of the doors to leave the access to the firemen (+ call SOS with coordinates gps on the volvo and saab ...)
- YES it is a defect of the system autoliv, an untimely trigger ("misuse" in English) as they say in the jargon.
In order for the airbag to fire unnecessarily, it is because the airbag box is disconnected, it is very rare but possible, if for example there are short circuits in the car which by feeding in 12V the case sends it interference. The components of the airbag can also be rusty, as Vaxr01 says, it is rare also but suddenly an electric current can be created and start to power the capacities (components used to send the juice in the airbags for the firecracker in Operates and the airbag opens). The beams, the connector and the cables are also very sensitive, except that in principle the most common fault is a bad contact and therefore a desired event (airbags that open) that does not happen (thus airbag that does not come out Not), for example, but not the reverse as in your case.
Possible also, a bad luck, a nest of hen not the right way to shake just enough the accelerator sensor that resonates and that suddenly is interpreted as a real crash, except that there, there would necessarily all its Buddies who fart at the same time. That is, when a crash signal says you have to trigger, you never have the passenger front airbag alone without first having the belt buckle pretensioners and the driver front airbag.

So for you if only one passenger airbag triggers, it is indeed a fault of the electronics and the airbag box (the said calculator) to be precise.

Finally, a case changes very well, just as one can very well just do a reset, provided to have the suitcase. In your case, a change seems to me indispensable especially if it disconnects. A recuperation on a Espace 3 with breakage without accident: why not, provided to be the same model (ref on the airbag case) with the same version of soft on the airbag box (code E2prom). To be done by a pro even when it triggers it can kill someone. But I would go see the sav autoliv electronics (offices in cergy st christophe and factory near rouen). Individuals do not have the right to go directly in principle but good to try. Because this sav will be the only one able to know really why it triggered, because the airbag box is like a black box of plane, it keeps everything in memory hard, even without being fed. Renault, with its suitcase knows just some fault codes but this is limited. The expertise remains the responsibility of the equipment manufacturer. And then the ingés it interest them always to have returns of experience so as to go to the source. On the other hand, if the mechanic has just started by resetting everything, you will never know (to check because the reset allowed to the garage mechanic can be less powerful than the one made in study office) and the worst c 'Tis a good bet that it will start again.
